Commercial airlines impose many restrictions on flying with animals. Most airlines treat pets like luggage, requiring owners to crate their pets for the entire flight. Occasionally, smaller animals may be admitted to the cabin – as long as the carrier fits under a seat. Commercial airlines relegate large animals to the cargo hold with checked baggage. As with everything concerning commercial airlines, additional fees and regulations apply.
The Humane Society warns, “you should be aware that some animals are killed, injured, or lost on commercial flights each year. Excessively hot or cold ventilation and rough handling are often to blame.”
